Floods of September are not only in the South South-South of Nigeria, we in Lagos are not spared. And it is no longer only Lagos Island flooding; areas in the mainland are too. The rains are closing for the year and are giving us all they have till end of October, by the way. Here is a glimpse of the floods in action in the South -South.
Because of the flooding, Lagos took the precaution to ease the situation by getting rid of plastic bottles that clog the water ways before the rains. It is not that the flooring reduced completely, but it cleared shortly after the rain stopped. That is the report from Cassi, an area in the suburbs of the state. The flood there used to cover up salon cars and grind traffic to a halt. But now, thanks to that proactive measure, no plastic bottles appeared in the flood. And the Abeokuta-Lagos road had no traffic congestion.
However, the floods of September have not spared some parts of Lagos Island at all because of debris and illegal structures. Therefore, the rains in the past few days have filled up people’s sitting rooms and schools. The thing is that though Lagos Island is surrounded by water, more and more people are claiming those same bodies of water, with sand-fillings.
And with nowhere to go, the water level has risen high enough to become a nuisance to citizens of the Island. This is not noting that the area has no proper refuse disposal system and these clog the water ways. LAWMA the body responsible for the disposal system is now working double shifts to decrease flooding there
In closing, this is why our homes are the choicest. We seem to be on another planet because our buildings and routes to our buildings are free of these. These man-made floods are not part of our worries, a relief to our clients. We should blow our own trumpets, putting our money where our mouth is.
