February 14th is celebrated world over as St. Valentine’s Day. It is the day many choose to make peace and let love reign supreme. Ignore those who take it as a time to break all boundaries and do the profane. Understand that this particular day is a gift and if you like, an excuse to be the best of yourself. Take the step to love yourself by ignoring what you see as “offences” and gift yourself one of our homes. Do it and check out how your heart would be sweetened. Birth of Valentine Day
February celebrates love because of the people who lost their lives being kind. The most common reason for February 14th as a love day is linked to a Catholic priest. The priest, Valentine was executed in 300AD because he was helping christains, which was against the law. Then in 500AD, Pope Gelasius chose the 14th day of February to honour Christian martyrs named Valentine. Hmmm.
However, the date the pope chose is also when the Romans used to celebrate fertility. But by choosing that date, the Pope Gelasius and the church tried to turn it into a Christian celebration.
Then by the 14th to 15th century, the two myths fused it into a celebration of romance. When Geoffrey Chaucer the literature guru gave it a romantic hue in his poetry in 1375, it became a rave.
Then in the 18th and 19th century, people started swapping gifts and handmade cards in Europe and USA. In 1913, Hallmark Cards mass produced romantic cards for the celebration. (Remember Hallmark Cards?) They were really common in the 70s and 80s in Nigeria, till artists in our schools started making customized cards. I think they are still available in departmental stores though.
Anyway, ladies and gentlemen, that is how Valentine Day celebration came to live amongst us for good. Some of us have since graduated from gifting cards and ice-cream to gifting cars and of course, houses.
